It's official -- there's a lot of great psych rock coming out of Poland these days! Readers of this blog already know Fuzzy digs JAMES BUTTON BAND, and today I'm listening to the debut EP from FAIRYPORT CONVENT. This band covers a lot of psychedelic territory, with vibes from 60s psychedelia, 70s space rock, and even venturing into the fringes of industrial and Krautrock. Listen FAIRYPORT CONVENT on Bandcamp and read Fuzzy's review after the jump:
The EP kicks off with an homage to late 60s psychedlia and I mean that in the best possible way. Sort of a blend of my favorite Donovan tracks but with a heavier vibe. (Although the band says the inspiration is in part from Joy Division, which is fine with me -- that's a great band, too!)
The space vibes continue with "Shaggy Dog Story" really puts a smile on face. Kind of a playful riff, and isn't fun an important part of psych rock? Yea it is.
"Phoenix in Obsidian" is the heaviest track, and #4 "The Oracle" is my favorite track.
Dig the Polish lyrics on the final track, "Jamajskie Sny." I don't know exactly why, but I really dig psych songs in another language from English. I think it makes the song trippier when I can't understand the lyrics.
This debut from Fairyport Convent covers a lot of spaced-out psychedelic territory, and is definitely worth the time of any psych rock fan!
