"Instrumental psychedelic with a progressive edge" is how Fuzzy describes the debut album "Sage" by Poland's Wąż. A blend of stoner, prog metal, and ambient all tied together with a psychedelic sound. This is instrumental stoner music with a lot going on. Check out "Sage" by Wąż on Bandcamp:
The songs range from prog metal (the title track "Sage) to mellow ambient ("Solaris") and a blend of both ("Prism") yet the variety really works here. There is a flow and a cohesion to the songwriting that makes for an enjoyable trip across the various styles of music.
Fuzzy's favorite: "Prism" really gets its groove going with its 10-minute run, while "Sage" seems to capture the essence of Wąż's sound, and was a good choice for the title track. The entire album delivers a solid 47 minutes instrumental prog & psych.
Wąż was founded in late 2014 in Cracow by Arek Kaus (gr) Bartek Szeląg (bs) Kamil Łazorczyk (dr) and Paweł Piecha (voc). In 2016 band released on Youtube two singles: Demons in my Head & Revolution. Later on Kuba Szyma joined Wąż on drums and the band evolved into an instrumental trio. Music of the group is a mix of progressive metal compositions, stoner rock grooves and psychedelic trip passages.
Wąż is from Poland with members:
Arek Kaus - guitar/synths
Bartek Szeląg - bass
Kuba Szyma - drums

With a band like THE LANCASTERS in The Swamp, it ain't no secret that Fuzzy digs psych rock. So when JAMES BUTTON BAND sent me their new psych rock album, "Desert Revelations" you know I was down to dig it. As in, Fuzzy TOTALLY digs it! Every song has a catchy riff, layered vocals, and that magic blend of psychedelic and rock that only a band with a love for late 60s "Cosmic American Music" (as the band says) or music from the later Beatles albums (Fuzzy's take on James Button Band). Dig "Desert Revelations" by JAMES BUTTON BAND for yourself on Bandcamp:
Fuzzy's Favorite: OK this is a tough choice, since all 7 tracks are solid psych rock. I would say the organ and guitar work in "Good day, time" are absolute psych rock magic, and for a flat-out riffy rocker, Fuzzy's choice is "Powderhorn Blues." No wait -- "Hot Burrito #4" has that slow, bluesy sound which can sometimes be captured so well by psych rock. Or what about the boogie woogie of "Quarantine Days" ? OK, I can't really pick one favorite ... but I'm glad to play this album from start to finish, and then over again.
"Desert Revelations" by JAMES BUTTON BAND is easily one of the best psych rock albums of the year.
James Button Band is from Szczecinek, Poland with members:
Jakub Legan - guitar, lead vocals
KArolina Baworowska - bass, hammond organ, piano
Kamil Kondała - drums, backing vocals
From the band:
Rock'n'Roll band from Szczecinek (Poland), founded in 2012. Their music combines Rock, Blues, Psychedelic Rock and Progressive Rock. Inspirations are late 60's/70's and a present day's vibrations.
Since 2018, they direct their music to listeners outside their country. This year, due to the lockdown, the band locked themselves in the studio and used the concert adrenaline in their studio work. The resulting album combines the inspiration of Cosmic America Music, created by artist Gram Parsons, with their own raw Rock'n'Roll.

The new album "Berdoa" from BERDOSA lays down the fuzz with 8 heavy tracks. Fuzzy digs the blend of stoner doom, groove metal, sludge & clean vocals, and of course -- fuzz! Berdosa delivers a high-energy, original sound with some of the best vocals I've heard in a while. Berdosa calls their sound "Nusantara Doom Metal" and you'll call it "Awesome Heavy Fuzz!" Check out "Berdoa" from Bandcamp:
Fuzzy's Favorite: This is a solid album all the way through, with "Bonetongue" capturing the band's vocals and fuzz along with some epic guitar work. "Left Hand of God" is epic instrumental, first starting acoustic and building up to a wall of fuzz. And dig the Malaysian lyrics on the final song. Right on!
Berdosa band is from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with members:
Afiq Iskandar on vocals and guitar
Ezekiel Mavani on bass
Ravi Shankar on Drums
From the band:
Malaysian stoner doom band, Berdosa would like to announce the release of their latest album which is currently available for sale in CD and digital streaming formats.
In 2017, three guys from the Malaysian peninsular plugged into a few fuzz pedals, tuned their guitars one and half steps down, collected the heaviest snare and cymbals they could find and inadvertently created a gateway to the spectral plane of Nusantara Doom Metal. They later called themselves Berdosa.

If you dig Leonard Cohen, stop reading now and immediately get over to Bandcamp to buy "At The Bottom Of The Sea" by ACHACHAK. Deep vocals, slow riffs, and lyrics that speak from the heart of an anguished soul will leave you impressed how the stoner genre can be used as the foundation for such serious and devastating music. Check out "At The Bottom Of The Sea" by ACHACHAK on Bandcamp:
The album starts off quietly enough, but "Ride All Alone" is really more of an overture than a song in the same style as the rest of the album. Because in "Truth," the tone and intent kick into high gear, and it's a menacing kick. Slow, burning, vocals with screams in the background. At this point you realize the album is going to take (drag?) you along with it, as the singer (narrator?) tells you about his burdens.
"My Inner Peace" includes a wailing guitar solo that seems to build forever until the song suddenly ends. Watch the video for "My Inner Peace" on YouTube:
"Metaphorically Speaking" starts with the sound of rain, as if the singer is sitting on his porch and decides to hit the tape player to record his music along with his anguish. And it turns into a raw, bluesy rocker.
The antagonist's self-examination continues with "Kill The Toxic Ego," but he seems to have moved on from self-loathing towards action, as the title suggest. This one might be my favorite song on the album, which is saying a lot.
The next two songs continue with the blues-infused desert rock, and the album ends with a sort of outro with the acoustic "Last Man Standing" which wraps up the narrator's story and ties together the themes set out in the album.
This is not an album which lets itself drift into the background. It grabs your attention, and holds onto it for 40 minutes. "At The Bottom Of The Sea" by ACHACHAK is a serious album and will surely impress you with its sophisticated approach, stripped-down sound, and heartfelt vocals. Really excellent music, theme, and production.
The band calls their style "Slavic Stoner Rock" or rather, "loud spiritual stoner music" which I agree with!
From the band:
Eight tracks from these young founders of a new genre called "SSR"(Slavic Stoner Rock) came from dusty and smoked studios, surrounded by three mountains, fresh and cold air, a large lake and homemade spirits.
Achachak (Achachak meaning “Spirit“, of Native American origin) is a Croatian stoner rock - metal band from Vučipolje, Croatia. Achachak was originally formed in 1999 by „Milo” (vocals & guitar) & his brother „Miro” (drums). However, the band considers 2020. as its official year of formation when the kids are releasing their debut record „At the bottom of the sea.”

Talk about ticking a lot of Fuzzy's boxes: Doom. Recorded to tape. Killer vocals. Wild guitar work. Dulcimer. Pandemically dark theme. Santa Cruz*. Check out the new EP from SLOTH entitled "The Night of the Flying Banshee." Or as I like to call it, "Soundtrack to the Pandemic" because it strikes me, as well, exactly how I feel most of the time now. Have a listen and decide for yourself:
I would dig this just for the doom and the vocals (both great), and the lo-fi to-tape recording, but the wild guitar work is just blowing my mind. I love it when a guitar takes off into outer space while the doom just chugs along underneath.
And it's a pretty rare doom album that includes a dulcimer! Badass! It's like the band's secret weapon.
Goes without saying that the Randy Holden cover is awesome.
Sure, "The Night of the Flying Banshee" is a little short, but that's why the Bandcamp app has a REPEAT mode.
All this sonic tastiness (dreadfulness?) comes from 2 musicians in Santa Cruz:
Ariel Pang- Electric Guitars, Bass Guitar, Dulcimer, Drums, and Keyboards
Josh Diaz- Vocals
Recording details:
Recorded analog on Tascam MF-P01 4-track cassette recorder and digitally from September- October 2020
* Because OF COURSE Fuzzy went to school in Santa Cruz. Explains a lot, right?

When THE ELECTRIC STONER talks, Fuzzy listens! He plugged Fuzzy into Jerico and he said I would dig the Finnish duo's unique blend of stoner, blues, and psych. And so will you! Check out JERICO on Bandcamp:
"Heavy Smoke" is the slowest and most bluesy of the three songs, and makes for a great opener. It gives the rest of the EP a chance to build upon its foundation, and the lyrics are especially poignant for old Fuzzy who has been living under a smoke cloud in California for the past two months.
"Others (won't dare to go)" heats things up as it gets into more psych rock territory, but the killer guitar work and vocals are still in place. The use of layered vocals really works on this song, some drifting in the background, some in the foreground, while the drums keep things steady throughout.
"Kadut" holds onto the psychedelia but fuzzes things out as it swerves into the desert. And the vocals change into Finnish which sound absolutely fantastic. They really add to the other-worldliness when you can't understand the words.
So with just 3 songs, Jerico demonstrates not only a master of 3 styles of stoner music, but bring a unique sound to each of them. Fuzzy can't recommend Jerico's "Stonelake sessions" highly enough. The Electric Stoner was right!
From the band:
Jerico is a Finnish studio project formed by two longtime friends. The idea behind Jerico is to do-it-yourself as much as possible and to find interesting locations for composing and recording, which creates a unique theme for every release.
Jerico's music is its own kind of mixture of fuzzy stoner blues and desert rock, which has somehow atmospheric and psychedelic atmosphere.

Fuzzy has something a little different for you today. "The Endless Journey: North" by ARTEMIS is classical music album. Yes, "classical" like the kind from a movie soundtrack. Which is why I'm recommending you give it a listen, especially if you dig the music from the Lord of the Rings movies, or if you enjoy playing atmospheric music during a D&D session. If that doesn't recommend this album to you already, then let me add it comes from SCARECROW, the symphonic doom band from Russia who's excellent album from 2019 which I enjoyed quite a lot (here's my review). Give a listen to "The Endless Journey: North" by ARTEMIS:
Check out the video teaser which explains the album better than I can:
From the band:
“North” it is conceptual 10-pieces, 1 hour length suite for full symphonic orchestra, some groups of folk instruments and choir.
Here the idea of soundscapes is fully reflected - each part is saturated with different sounds - from the gentle rustle of heather inflorescences and the buzzing of bumblebees to the monstrous peals of thunder in the stormy northern ocean.
The journey is reflected not only in the soundscapes but also, more importantly, in the very nature of the music: it begins in the temperate climate zone and the first parts of Moorlands, Forests, Mountains, Fjords have a quieter sound with a greater influence of folk music, but as we move on to north, the nature of the music is changing. In Tundra, Icebergs, Arctic and Ocean, the emphasis shifts towards the powerful, epic sound of a full symphony orchestra.
The last thing Fuzzy has to say is, these days anyone can appreciate a mellow, relaxing yet textured and layered collection of songs that transport you to a fantasy world, and take you away from the hellscape we seem to find ourselves trapped in, even if just for an hour.
A CD will be released October 9th with 2 editions:
Standard edition 6-panel digipak
Extended edition with 6-panel digipak, photo book and signed postcard

Fuzzy loves great music and he loves a concept. Albums with a theme or a story? Sign me up! Argentina's OX EN MAYO ALTO have created a new video from their new 3-song post-rock mini-EP "Los famosos días de la fiebre" (Famous Days of the Fever) which weaves allegories of world-creation together with a blend of post-hardcore, prog, and dreamcore. Watch the video for on 666 Mr. Doom's YouTube channel:
Here is how the band describes the EP and the video:
In our EP we try to tell about the destruction and reconstruction of a fictional world by establishing analogies with 1) a famous speech by Robert Oppenheimer after the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan, and 2) a fragment of the film The VVitch, written and directed by Robert Eggers, 3) ‘The Great Day of His Wrath’, oil painting on canvas by the English painter John Martin.
