Red Beard Wall has a major release dropping Feb. 22 which is likely to catapult him from the underground music scene and into mainstream popularity. His blend of "singing like an angel and screaming like a banshee" layered over slick doomy riffs gives Red Beard Wall a sound all his own. On to the interview.....
FUZZY CRACKLINS: Thanks for taking the time to chat!
RED BEARD WALL: First off, thank you so much for having me! Im hugely honored and grateful for the opportunity!FC: What inspired you to make music?
RBW: Honestly it's just who i am. I didn't choose music, music chose me. I've been thinking about, and loving music ever since my brain could register. I just don't remember a time that it wasn't at the forefront of my heart and mind. It's everything to me. My whole life.FC: How did you develop your singing style?
RBW: The simple answer is I have no idea, I just do my thing. I do what I think sounds good, and satisfies my creativity. I've always loved the aggression, fury, and disgustingness of screamed vocals. On the flip side i also love soaring cleans with melodies that burrow in your soul. So I just do both! And rather than having clean sections, and screamed sections, I use both interchangeably quite a bit. I think that's where some of the uniqueness comes from.FC: You recorded your new album completely yourself. What was the biggest challenge in that? Biggest reward?
RBW: The biggest challenge for me, number one is time. As a ton of bands experience, it's not easy to record an album with the necessary time and attention to detail needed, while having families, full time jobs, playing shows, etc. Also I'm still a novice when it comes to the more technical aspects of the process. Im learning as I go, so that's challenging, but also extremely rewarding to implement the knowledge and have some success. Biggest reward is hearing the songs back and the excitement and sense of accomplishment it brings.FC: How does a Red Beard Wall song come into existence?
RBW: It usually starts with a cool melody in my head. I then use my guitar to translate that riff/idea. I'll then come up with a second riff that flows and transitions well with the "main riff." After that I just vary the riffs in cool ways. I'm big on synchronicity as well so a lot of time the start and end mirror each other. I always intrinsically know where the drums should be, and what they should be doing. After the music is done, only then will I think about vocals. I like to let the music tell me what to say, and how to say it. Other than that I just trust my creativity and stay out of the way as much as possible. If it sounds good, I don't over analyze. I just keep it moving.
FC: Who did your super awesome logo?
RBW: Thanks for the kind words! I've loved the logo from the moment I laid eyes on it! Heath May designed it. He's an artistic genius, among also being a world-renowned architect. He is also one of my best friends. We've known each other since we were birthed.FC: Best link where fans can follow your tour dates?
RBW: You can find all pertinent info on my Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and redbeardwall.bandcamp.com. I update those daily, so those are the best ways to stay up on all things Red Beard Wall.FC: Tell your fans who else they should listen to. No band is too big or too small to shout out.
